|WOUGNET raised youth awareness on the roles of ICT in development|
Today's young generations are capable of using Information and Communication Technology strategically and innovatively for their economic development and when youth are guided appropriately and provided with opportunities and means to use the available ICT tools, they are able to meaningfully and proactively take part in entrepreneurship and other economic development activities.
As a result of this, WOUGNET has established and is working with a national network of youth in ICT4D to compliment her activities in engaging and building capacity amongst the youth in both the rural and urban setting.
In addition, WOUGNET in partnership with Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) conducted ICT Youth forum to raise youth awareness on the roles of ICTs in development. The forum was conducted in the three districts of Acholi Sub-Region which include Kitgum, Pader and Gulu District and the forum was targeting youth at secondary schools and those at the tertiary institutions.
During the forum, the team from UCC raised youth awareness on UCC as a government body and its roles in the communication sector. Awareness was also created on the consumer rights, in this case the telecommunication users. Meanwhile, WOUGNET sensitize the youth on the role of ICT in local, national and global development.
Practical hand-on demonstration was also done. For instance, facilitators demonstrated to the forum participants how to use internet to carryout research using Google search, they ware also shown how to use social media tools to communicate and share information. Most interestingly, forum participants enjoyed and appreciated voice and video chat which the facilitator demonstrated to them.
The forum also attracted mobile telecommunication companies who were invited to come and share with the youth some of the telecommunication services they are offering and to also respond to some of the concerns that the youth face while using mobile telecommunication services. The telecommunication companies that participated in the forum include MTN – Uganda and Uganda telecom (UTL).
In conclusion, over 150 youth (students) per district participated in the forum in which 10 – 15 secondary schools were selected in each district to benefit from the forum. The ICT youth forum is a national activity initiated by WOUGNET in collaboration with UCC to raise youth awareness on the roles of ICT in development and to sensitize youth on the opportunities that ICT can offer in economic development.
